Due to Germany’s suggestion the European Commision has decided to declare the year 2018 a European year of cultural heritage.
It will be under the motto “Sharing Heritage” and is supposed to offer opportunity to all European citizens to to revive their common heritage and to become conscious of it. It’s also supposed to give reason to recognize contexts and common grounds between various, interregional cultures and their interaction and cohesion within Europe. “Within a time of refugee immigration and finance crisis [the year of cultural heritage] will show the connecting essence of the common cultural roots and at the same time the cultural diversity of the continent [..]”, said minister of culture Marina Münch in the press statement.
How the city of Cologne will participate in the project is still unclear, yet but sure is that with unique monuments like the Cologne Cathedral there are parts to begin with. In the end it’s especially important to show the cultural heritage to the younger generation and bring it closer to them.
